About

The California Democracy Act Coalition

We are a student group dedicated to saving California by restoring democracy to its government. Right now, one third of the legislature can block the will of the majority on both the budget and revenue. This means that the majority of our representatives, who are elected by the people, are unable to run the state the way voters want them to. As a result, California, one of the wealthiest economies in the world, is billions of dollars in debt and can’t protect and empower its citizens.

Sacramento’s perpetual gridlock and unjust policies can be fixed with a simple initiative that we want to put on the November 2010 ballot. It is called The California Democracy Act, and it says “All legislative actions on revenue and budget must be determined by a majority vote.” Democracy, based on the principle of majority rule, can save our state.

Why We Care

The undemocratic and dysfunctional current system is breaking California’s promises to its citizens. We students are forced to pay higher tuition for deteriorating schools. Our professors and staff are being asked to work more hours for lower wages. All across primary, secondary and higher education, Californians are being denied their right to a quality, affordable education.

Minority rule has caused the closing of state parks, roads, libraries, police and fire stations, and schools. It is hurting all of us and stealing our futures. We must restore the American principle of democracy, and make California work for Californians again.
